Cause of Vomiting and Diarrhea in Children

Children, especially toddlers, can experience a lot of sickness symptoms with different causes. Upset stomach, diarrhea and vomiting are among the most common conditions many children and toddlers experience, and many times, they are easily treated. However, this does not mean that you must take them lightly. When your children vomit and experience diarrhea, you must make sure you do the right things. They can be symptoms of something normal, but also can be something more serious.

What Causes Vomiting and Diarrhea in Children?

There are several possible causes of diarrhea and vomiting in children, such as:

  • Food allergies. Many children start to develop allergy to gluten or lactose in cow’s milk at early ages. If you notice them experiencing such symptoms after drinking milk, eating cake or munching on bread, it may be the cause.
  • Complications from teething. This usually happens when many kids experience their first teething, and they are harmless. However, parents still must pay attention to the children’s conditions to make sure they are not dehydrated because of all the diarrhea attack and vomiting.
  • Bad reactions to medicine. Some kids develop severe reactions to several medications such as antibiotics. This is also normal, so pay attention if your children develop such symptoms after they are given medicines such as antibiotics.
  • Food poisoning or food borne illness. This is serious condition; if vomiting and nausea happen after you feed the children some food with dubious conditions (or maybe not paying attention to the expiration date), your children can experience such symptoms.
  • Flu and bacterial infection. Streptococcus infection and flu both have similar symptoms: nausea, vomiting, sore throat and inflammation. Since both can have similar symptoms, it is better to bring the children to the doctor for further diagnosis.

Sometimes, nausea, vomiting and dehydration can also result from more serious condition, so make sure you go to the doctor if the condition becomes serious especially if the diarrhea and vomiting do not stop after 1-2 days.

Here are things that you must do to treat diarrhea and vomiting before you call the doctor:

  • Give them a lot of fluid. Diarrhea and vomiting will make children lose vital fluid and experience dehydration. Besides water, you can give them diluted electrolyte drink (no caffeine!), warm broth or apple juice. Besides giving them fluid, these beverages can help calming and settling them down.
  • If you want to feed them, give them B.R.A.T (Banana, Rice, Apple and Toast). These combinations are easy to eat, easy in the stomach, and they can help harden the children’s stools. Avoid giving them dairy products and oily or fatty foods. B.R.A.T is good for the first one or two days, to ease their stomach.
  • If the diarrhea and vomiting does not stop, or if they are accompanied with rash, high fever, sore throat and other unsettling symptoms, bring your children to the doctor immediately, to find out if there are signs of serious illness.

Diarrhea and vomiting are not uncommon symptoms in children, but do not take them lightly and make sure you do the right thing.

Parents have to know the right time to call doctor for help or they can try to do the home remedies at first. Parents also have to pay great attention about dehydration sign which is seen from the children who are suffering of vomiting and diarrhea.
