Eating is something you must do carefully, but sometimes people do not eat in good way. They eat quickly, eat without paying attention to what they eat, chew too fast, or eat while seating in bad position. These habits cause nausea and vomiting after eating, and other unpleasant conditions.

However, there is a specific condition called acid reflux, which most people may call it with its more familiar name: heartburn. This condition affects quite many people, but it has not been known why certain people can have this condition.

Causes Nausea and Vomiting, Nausea and Vomiting after Eating, nausea and vomiting treatment

Acid reflux is a condition where a muscle called Lower Esophageal Spinchter (LES) does not close as soon as the food that you eat goes to your stomach. If this happens, the acid from your stomach moves up to esophagus, causing nausea, burning pain in the chest and even vomiting if it is too severe.

People who have weak LES will experience this more often, and more easily if they eat in rather careless way. This is of course very unpleasant and can ruin a good meal.

Things that Trigger Acid Reflux

While some people get acid reflux more easily than others, there are things that can trigger the symptoms. People who do not have acid reflux may not experience the symptoms, but more susceptible people will experience them even with the slightest triggers. Here are some common triggers of acid reflux symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and heartburn:

  • Eating too much and too fast in one go, and not chewing the food carefully.
  • Eating foods that can trigger heartburn such as chocolate, tomatoes, fried and fatty foods, onion, citrus fruits and garlic.
  • Drinking too much soda, coffee, tea, etc.
  • Eating with bad seating position and lying down right after the meal.
  • Snacking right before bedtime.
  • Consuming medications that can cause muscle relaxation, or medications such as pills for hypertension.
  • Being overweight.

These are not the causes of acid reflux, but they trigger the symptoms. You may experience sudden feel of nausea, vomiting, burning in the chest, stomach and throat, burping, a bit sweating, and acidic taste when the stomach acid regurgitated to your throat and even the back of your mouth. In more severe level, you may experience sore throat, bloody vomiting, and dry cough.

How to Reduce Acid Reflux Occurrence

Some people simply experience acid reflux symptoms more easily than others, so the solution is to reduce the possibility of experiencing it. Here are some things you can do:

  • Avoid foods that can trigger heartburn and eat in smaller portions in a day rather than three big meals.
  • Use higher pillows to sleep so your head is raised 4-6 inches from the bed.
  • Reduce some weight, but do not rush it. Use healthy eating patterns and exercise.
  • Eat while sitting straight on the chair and avoid sleeping after eating.
  • Enjoy your meal; chew slowly and avoid eating in a rush.
  • Avoid eating while wearing tight belts or clothes.

Also, you may want to discuss with your doctor about certain medications that may trigger your condition. This way, at least you can reduce the amount of nausea, vomiting and heartburn you experience after eating.
